Our area guide to Standish provides you with a brief overview of the neighbourhood from its properties, public parks, local schools, council tax, public transport links through to shopping and going out.
Standish offers a diverse property stock which caters both for those looking to get onto the property ladder and those looking for the luxury of large individual detached properties.
The core of the housing stock ranges from traditional stone built cottages, such as those on Church Street, through to traditional red brick Victorian cottages whilst examples of inter war housing can be found along the Wigan Road in the form of larger style semi-detached family accommodation.
Modern development has occurred throughout the decades but mainly in the last 20 years or so, such as the housing available on Woodhusrt Drive, Hampstead Road and Boars Head Avenue. Further examples of plush new executive modern developments can be found in Rushwood Park and Worthing Park offering a diverse range modern living from 1 to 2 bedroom apartments and 3 to 5 bedroom town houses and executive properties.
When leaving Standish and travelling along the Chorley Road you will find a range of typically traditional style semi-detached accommodation through to individual palatial mansions set in substantial grounds.
Standish offers a good variety of shopping for your everyday needs. Along Pole Street you will find a Co-operative supermarket and along School Lane, a Spar shop. The majority of the remaining retailers can be found within the High Street and Preston Road and include numerous banks, hairdressers and independently owned retail outlets.
Noel Chadwick is one of the more famous local stores and is described as a unique farm-to-fork food retailer which slaughters, prepares and sells locally sourced meat via its on-site abattoir, food hall, and fully licensed cafe bar and restaurant.
Indeed a more extensive range of amenities and high street retailers can be found within the neighbouring town of Wigan with, in particular, the Galleries and Grand Arcade Shopping Centres providing an ideal destination.
Local cuisine includes Cantonese, Chinese and Indian takeaways and also La Mama Italian restaurant. There are a good variety of public houses including The Last Orders, The Globe and The Black Bull to name but a few.
Standish is home to the Standish Court Golf Club, where you can take in some of Lancashire’s breathtaking countryside while playing 18 holes of golf on the well presented and cared for course.
Elnup Wood fringes nearby Shevington, and has a stream marking the boundary between the towns of Shevington and Standish. The wood is a great place to visit for tranquil woodland walks at any time of the year.
Ashfield Park is a medium sized park on the A49 about 1 mile south of the Standish town centre and offers large open green area with 2 plays areas, 2 football pitches and parking facilities.
